Vicar Water – Historical Background
The lakes at Vicar Water were originally established by the 5th Duke of Portland  to supply the Welbeck Estate with fresh fish in the latter half of the 19th Century. The area, known for it’s rich coal reserves for most of the 20th Century was restored to woodland and heathland in the early 80′s after the closure of Clipstone Colliery.
